Watermarking your cake photo is easy and free. Find out how with this how to watermark a cake photo tutorial.
When sharing your cake photos online, it’s a good idea to have either your logo, your business name or your personal name somewhere on the cake. This lets everyone know who created the cake.
Have you ever come across a great cake online thought “Hmm, I wonder who made this, I’d really like to see their other cakes?”. Someone may love your work and want to view your portfolio and check out your past/future cakes. Watermarking your pictures will help drive traffic back to you and your Facebook page/website.
A few years ago I received a message from another decorator and she had a customer come in with a print out of my cake from Pinterest. The customer wanted an exact copy of the cake. The decorator was kind enough to message me, asking if she could reproduce the cake and of course I was thrilled – how lovely that someone requested a cake I had designed! When the decorator posted her version of the cake to her Facebook page, she gave me credit for the design. As a hobby cake decorator, that was a real thrill!
Watermarking your cake photo also helps prevent people passing off your work as their own. Sad but true, it’s happening more and more these days (it happened to me with one of my Christmas cakes). There are people out there who will take your cake picture and add it to their website or Facebook page as an example of their work. While watermarks can be removed, if your picture has your logo or name visible people may be less likely to steal it.
So you have two options when watermarking your cake photo:
- You can add your business name/website or your personal name as text on the photo – so basically just type them out. This is a great for those that do not yet have a logo and this is what I did in the beginning. After I started my business I would add “Love Cake Create” to the photos. If you’d like to type in your website address so it’s easy for people to find you that’s OK too.
- Add your logo. This is a great option since your logo forms part of your business branding. A logo can come in all shapes and sizes; some with a big white square/rectangle surrounding the logo, some with a transparent background. The transparent background is my preferred choice. My logo designer was able to send me various files – my colour logo with a white background, the colour logo with a transparent background, a white logo with a transparent background and also a secondary logo. My main logo is the one at the top of this blog page, but I’ve chosen to use my secondary logo (Love Cake Create in the pink circle) to watermark my cake photos. Feel free to add what you have available, something is better than nothing!
The collage below shows the same cake with 3 versions of watermarks:
- The first photo is watermarked using text.
- The second photo is watermarked with my logo that has a transparent background (this one is my favourite).
- The third photo is watermarked with my logo surrounded by a big white square.
How to watermark a cake photo
There are some fantastic free photo editing programs available either on your phone or PC. The program I love using is iPiccy. If you’d like to add a watermark, crop a photo, adjust the lighting or create a collage, iPiccy can do it all – and the best part? It’s absolutely free and user friendly.
So let’s start off by watermarking your cake photo with text (scroll down to see the screenshot).
- Go to iPiccy
- Click on Edit A Photo.
- Click on Open (just above the “Open to get started box”).
- Find your photo from the saved location and click open. It should now appear on screen.
- To add text, click on the Designer icon on the left hand side (looks like a stack of papers).
- Click on the Add Text icon up the top.
- The text box should now appear over your cake photo.
- On the left hand side is a box that says “Your text here”. Delete that text and enter in your watermark (business name, website address or your personal name). The button above this text box will allow you to change the font and down the bottom you can change the size of the text and colour. If you have a particular colour associated with your business, you can enter in the hex colour by clicking the colour button.
- If you would prefer to have your watermark faded so it’s not so prominent, you can do that by using the fade slider up the top.
- Once you’re happy with how your watermark looks, you can drag and move the text box to where you would like it positioned.
- Click Apply and then Save.
That’s it! It might take a few minutes to work your way around in the beginning, but it gets easier and faster.
If you’d prefer to watermark a photo with your logo instead, follow these easy steps:
- Go to iPiccy
- Click on Edit A Photo
- Click on Open (just above the “Open to get started box”).
- Find your photo from the saved location and click open. It should now appear on screen.
- To add your logo, click on the Designer icon on the left hand side (looks like a stack of papers).
- Click on the Add photo icon up the top.
- Click Upload Image
- Find your logo from the saved location. It will now appear in the top left hand side of the screen.
- Drag the logo over and position it on the cake photo. It may be quite large, just drag the corners of the box until it’s the size you want.
- Once you’re happy, click Apply and then Save. Then you’re done!
There you have it! That is how to quickly and easily watermark your cake photo. I would suggest adding a watermark to each cake photo you share online. It might be in cake groups on Facebook, your website or cake gallery websites. If you’d like to join a few cake groups on Facebook, check out my post 10 Facebook Groups for Cake Decorators.
